Lightning strikes thrice: Ultra-rare Saab 9-5NG SportCombis for sale!

A unicorn trio: Three Saab 9-5NG SportCombis hit the market

The Saab 9-5NG SportCombi is one of the rarest and most coveted Saabs ever built — only 37 pre-production cars were assembled before Saab Automobile AB ceased operations, and just 27 are known to still exist today. That makes it a true unicorn among enthusiasts. Now, in an incredibly rare and poignant twist, three of these elusive SportCombis are up for sale simultaneously — offering what may well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collectors and Saab lovers around the world.

These aren’t ordinary sales. Each of the current owners is a lifelong Saab enthusiast, with multiple Saabs in their garages, and deeply mixed emotions about parting ways with their beloved SportCombis. But as the years pass and the cars are driven less frequently, a shared desire has emerged: to pass these automotive gems on to a new generation of Saab fans who will cherish them, drive them, and preserve their legacy.

And make no mistake — these cars still turn heads everywhere they go. Every time I take my own 9-5NG SportCombi out of the garage, people stop, take pictures, and ask if Saab has started building cars again. The design remains so timeless, so advanced for its era, that it continues to spark curiosity and admiration more than a decade after it first appeared.

The 9-5NG SportCombi community has always been a tight-knit one, and I’ve been fortunate to stay in touch with many of the owners since the Saab bankruptcy auctions back in 2012–2013. Over the years, I’ve seen these cars change hands, cross borders, and appear at Saab events across Europe — and I’ve been asked by the owners of these three particular cars (as well as several former owners of SportCombis sold earlier — see table at the end of the post) to help share the news with the wider Saab community.

This post is simply a reflection on a unique moment — three unicorns, available at once — and a way to share that with the Saab community. It’s not a commercial advertisement, and I have no commercial interest in any of the cars mentioned. Details may be incomplete, outdated or contain errors, so if you’re interested, please be sure to reach out directly to the respective owners for the most accurate and up-to-date information!

#04-46 Saab 9-5NG SportCombi Aero Turbo4 BioPower

Currently located in Berg, Switzerland, this carbon grey Aero with a 2.0t BioPower engine has been cherished and preserved in truly pristine condition. What makes this car so special isn't just its rare spec — it's the story it tells and the details that set it apart. It’s been fitted with nearly everything Hirsch Performance had to offer: the aggressive front spoiler, elegant side skirts, sculpted rear diffuser, and of course their legendary 260hp engine upgrade.

Adding to its presence and performance are the powerful Brembo brakes and a stunning set of 20" Hirsch rims — breathtakingly beautiful, painfully expensive, and virtually impossible to find today!

"#04-46" isn’t just a number either. This car made its mark during the Saab dealer tour in Germany and France in the autumn of 2011, turning heads and winning hearts wherever it went.

And the story continues: both the car and its owner will be attending the IntSaab 2025 event in Melchtal, Switzerland from 8–10 August. It’s a unique chance to see this beauty in person, hear its story, and ask any questions directly. More information can be found on the Car Profile page and directly from the current owner at joachim.benke@modus.ch.

Note: The photo shown here predates the installation of the Hirsch front spoiler and side skirts.

#09-03 Saab 9-5NG SportCombi Aero TTiD

Owned by the founder of Czechia’s leading Saab dealer, Suchomel Auto, this stunning black TTiD Aero SportCombi is located in Ústí nad Orlicí, about 160 km east of Prague.

What makes "#09-03" truly special isn’t just its rarity — it’s one of only three 9-5NG SportCombis in the country — but also its origin and specification. Craftfully hand-assembled in January 2011 at Saab’s legendary “Frickeboa” facility in Trollhättan, this car features the most powerful production diesel engine Saab ever offered: the 2.0 TTiD, delivering 400 Nm of torque at just 1,750 rpm. It also comes equipped with the DriveSense adaptive chassis system and sits on a set of striking 20" 5-spoke Saab “Star” rims — a rare and desirable option that perfectly complements the car’s bold, elegant stance.

"#09-03" has made the journey to Trollhättan several times for the Saab Festival, proudly flying the Czech flag among the global Saab community.

#42-09 Saab 9-5NG SportCombi Vector TiD

"#42-09" is currently one of just five 9-5NG SportCombis in Germany — and arguably one of the most advanced. Unlike most examples, this Java Brown TiD Vector was assembled on the regular Trollhättan production line in June 2011, offering a rare glimpse of what could have become the standard for a fully launched SportCombi.

What truly sets this car apart, however, is its exceptionally rare and elegant parchment interior. Of all SportCombis produced, only three were delivered with something other than black — and "#42-09" is one of them. The cabin features Light Neutral perforated leather sport seats (interior code C70) in a sophisticated Cocoa/Light Neutral two-tone configuration, complemented by Light Neutral leather door inserts, creating a light, inviting atmosphere.

The car is also very well-equipped, featuring: Harman Kardon premium sound system, HDD-based infotainment system, Rear seat entertainment with integrated headrest screens, Dedicated rear climate control, Panoramic sunroof (one of only 12 SportCombis ever built with this option), Engine start/stop system (one of just three SportCombis to have it) and a Power tailgate.

But "#42-09" isn’t just a rare spec sheet — it’s part of the living Saab community. The car has proudly appeared at events across Europe, including the Saab Festival in Trollhättan, the Autohuis Joel gathering in the Netherlands, and the Pilots Wanted event at Autohaus Lafrentz in Germany, among others.

9-5NG SportCombis that have changed owners since 2013

Almost all of the remaining SportCombis were sold at the Saab bankruptcy auctions in 2012 and 2013. In the years that followed, nine of the roadworthy cars changed hands (excluding those initially purchased by dealers at the time of the auctions). While exact transaction details have remained private, reported sale prices have ranged between €75,000 and over €130,000. Not bad at all, considering that the original (German) list price for a base 9-5NG SportCombi Linear with the 1.6t engine started at €35,500, while a standard Aero model with the 2.8t V6 and XWD was listed at €57,800!

A record number of “next generation” Saabs gathered at the former Saab test track in Trollhättan for a unique photoshoot… Finally! No less than 127 next generation Saabs -a record number!- gathered in a location that normally is closed to the public: the former Saab test track. Six 9-5NG SportCombis, 105 9-5NG Sedans and 16 9-4Xs, from many countries around Europe, including Austria, Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. We were finally able to get together in person (or should I say “in car”?) again after the long pandemic-induced events pause, and the excitement among the participants was palpable. In the run up to the photoshoot we had been quite secretive as getting access to our location hadn’t been approved by NEVS until quite late in the process, but when we briefed all the drivers on the venue all was immediately forgiven! I guess “finally” also applies to the fact that it took no less than two months(!) for the relevant Swedish authority, Lantmäteriet , to grant the distribution permit for my drone pictures and videos (LM2022/030606). Under normal circumstances, this takes 2-3 days but reportedly the combination of vacation period, staff shortages and the growing popularity of drones has led to these quite substantial queues. Cutting corners and simply uploading the videos to the Internet would technically have been possible, but breaking the rules would have meant risking substantial fines, or worse… Happy 9-4 / 9-5 day This post will go live at 12:00 CET on September 4th, which means that on the other side of the globe, the calendar will already have shifted to September 5th. Perfect timing in other words for this unique photoshoot with 9-4Xs and 9-5NGs!

I’ve been a Saab fan for as long as I can remember. The Saab-virus hit me through my best friend in school whose father had his own Saab dealership. I still vividly remember the test drive we took with the brand new 99 Turbo he had just received from the factory that day. I sat behind him and saw the Turbo meter that was mounted on top of the dashboard spike as we were vastly accelerating. I was sold on Saab but had to wait until 1999 before I could afford to buy my first one.
